Boards and Committees: An Opportunity to Give Back

Sponsored Content provided by Chris Coudriet - County Manager, New Hanover County Government

Local government works best when residents are involved. Hearing different perspectives and weighing solid facts helps our Board of Commissioners make better decisions for New Hanover County. One of the most effective ways to contribute is by serving on a county board or committee.

The county has more than 30 boards and committees. They exist to study issues that affect daily life and to give clear recommendations before items go to the Commissioners.

Staff provide the analysis. Boards test those ideas against real-world conditions. Together, that gives Commissioners better context to make decisions.

Many people are familiar with the Planning Board. It reviews rezonings and text amendments before they reach the Commissioners, looking at how a change on one property will affect the larger area. Members bring experience in development and land use, translating plans into practical guidance.

But the Planning Board is just one example. Other groups ensure Commissioners have the best information possible.

  • Quality of life: Airlie Gardens Foundation Board of Directors, Cape Fear Museum Advisory Board, and the Tourism Development Authority.
  • Technical standards: Mechanical, Plumbing, and Electrical examiners’ boards.
  • Health and human services: The Healing Place Board of Directors, the Health and Human Services Board, and Trillium’s Southern Regional Advisory Board.
  • Community perspective: The Commission on Women, The Latino Commission, and the Commission on African American History, Heritage, and Culture.

Service is voluntary. It takes time, preparation, and a willingness to listen and engage respectfully. Some boards require technical knowledge. Others simply need residents who care about the community and are willing to contribute. Either way, passion for this county matters—and service is demanding but worthwhile.

If you want to give back or put your expertise to work, I encourage you to look at the opportunities to serve. These boards and committees help move our community forward.

You can find current vacancies and application information on our Boards and Committees website.
