Jim Flock

General Manager, HSM Machine Works / Chairman, Cape Fear Workforce Development Board
As GM of HSM Machine Works

Flock runs a machine shop specializing in manufacturing highly complex, close-tolerance components for fighter jet and military helicopter landing gear parts. As chair of the CFWDB, he helps to lead and set policy for local workforce development infrastructure.

Regularly reads Modern Machine Shop for work, National Geographic and Smithsonian Magazine for pleasure.

Favorite websites: “MMSonline is a great resource for people in the manufacturing industry for tips and troubleshooting.” Also regularly visits Popphoto.com for photo ideas and tips.

TV channels and shows: “Probably typical for someone of my age, my go-to channels when watching TV are the History and Smithsonian channels. I particularly enjoy the shows Forbidden History and Air Disasters.” On the series Shogun, he writes, “If you need to spend 15 hours or so watching TV, invest it in this show. You won’t regret it.”

Favorite authors include James Michener and James Clavell. “I also read a fair amount of true crime novels and highly recommend Bill O’Reilly’s books Killing Kennedy and Killing Lincoln. This one is maybe a surprise: A dear friend convinced me to try Jane Austen, and, well, Pride and Prejudice is something that I couldn’t put down.”

Go-to apps: Flipboard daily for news, sports and mindless scrolling. Others include Samsung Health, WECT and LinkedIn.
